somewhereto_

I’m hoping that some Scottish spaces will be added to this great venture. If you’ve got contacts in local authorities or organisations with some free space, pass this on.

somewhereto_ is an inspired movement to liberate underused, disused and empty spaces in the UK and get people thinking creatively about their communities. They’ve helped thousands of young people find somewhereto_ do the things they love and unlocked over 400,000 square feet of space.

Defying hibernation

Since the 2nd of December I’ve been battling a never-ending urge to sleep and have been working behind the scenes, assisting with the technical production of The Stove’s First Foot event in Dumfries. It takes place on the High St tonight and tomorrow, just turn up in warm clothes at 8pm.

I’ve been learning a lot about problems with syncing video and network latency. So how best to do it? Why using GPS of course – there’s nothing more accurate than an atomic clock.

whale.fm

Having spent too many evenings classifying galaxies for www.galaxyzoo.org, I am now failing to resist helping decode what whales are saying to each other.

You too can help marine researchers understand what whales are saying. Listen to the large sound and find the small one that matches it best on whale.fm

Prestel Teletext ad from the mid 1970s

Why the sinister music?

Still find it amazing that this was being developed during the late 60′s (by the Post Office) at the same time as ARPANET in the US.

As the world tipped

I meant to post this video by Wired Aerial Theatre Production ages ago… bear with the first 30 seconds, it’s worth it:

Ever hopeful …

Reading Poorboy’s running commentary on tonight’s guising:

Just spoke to a tiny octopus who passionately made the case for my donating a chocolate bar for each tentacle…

Arts Stakeholders Seminar in Dalbeattie

Attended an interesting day’s seminar in Dumfries & Galloway to talk about (and listen to) ideas for the future of arts in the region. While I’m not qualified yet to really question the bigger picture, I couldn’t help but stick my oar in about the loss of younger people and graduates, especially those working in electronic arts and music. I don’t think the answer is an art college but maybe a practical architecture or environmental art course, working with the forestry commission, local businesses, schools, etc. And using existing, empty spaces for ‘frugal technology’ workshops.

And if you don’t know many people at a conference… yellow jumper for the win. People remember you if you resemble a buttercup.

Passing cloud by Tiago Barros

“Why traveling at high speed? Why having the final destiny always defined? And why always departing and arriving on a tight schedule? It is time to reconsider the act of traveling and start enjoying it accordingly.”
